How to build a geodesic dome step by step
Would you like to build your own geodesic dome, but do not know where to start?
Although its shape may look complicated, building a dome is a process you can learn step by step. The key is to have a good design, prepare the components properly and follow an organised workflow.
At Domorama, we want to show you how.
1. Choose your dome design
The first step is to decide what type of dome you want to build.
There are different sizes and designs, so consider the available space and how you will use it.
Building a small garden dome is different from building one intended as a home.
Once you have chosen a design, you can determine the dimensions of the components you will need.
2. Calculate the component dimensions
Geodesic domes are made from struts joined together to form triangles.
Depending on the design, you will need struts of different lengths and cuts at specific angles.
To make this easier, Domorama provides a geodesic dome calculator to help you find the measurements for compatible designs.
3. Prepare and cut the materials
Once the measurements are defined, it is time to prepare the components.
If you are building a timber dome, you will need to select suitable boards or battens and make the required cuts.
At this stage, work accurately, label the components and keep them organised.
Good preparation will make the subsequent assembly much easier.
4. Start assembling the frame
Now the most enjoyable part begins!
Following your chosen design, join the struts to form the triangles that will make up the dome.
As you progress, the frame begins to take on its characteristic curved shape.
Follow the assembly sequence, use the joints specified in the design and take the necessary safety precautions.
5. Check and finish your dome
Once the frame is assembled, inspect the joints and check that every component is correctly installed.
If your project includes exterior cladding, doors, windows or interior finishes, plan these stages according to the building's intended use.
Remember that a dome intended for habitation requires additional consideration of safety, construction and applicable regulations.
Learn with our free course
At Domorama, we have created a free 12-part course sharing our geodesic dome construction process.
You can learn about the tools we use, how we prepare the components and how we assemble our structures.
You can also download our free manual, which complements the course explanations.
